ABOUT SSN INSTITUTIONS
The SSN Institutions are the outcome of the
vision and initiative of Dr. Shiv Nadar, a pioneer in the field of Information
Technology. Dr. Nadar founded the HCL Group of Companies, which is today an
acknowledged leader in the IT world. The professional link that the SSN
Institutions enjoy with HCL Group of Companies has given the institution a
significant edge in terms of its reach in the software industry worldwide. The
Institution reflects the ideals of its founder.
The
Trust
The Shri Sivasubramaniya
Nadar Educational and Charitable Trust was founded in 1994 by Dr. Shiv Nadar &
(Late) Justice Pratap Singh, a judge of the Madras High Court. The Trust has
established the SSN College of Engineering (SSNCE) and the SSN School of
Management & Computer Applications (SSN SoMCA) in 1996.
SSN Institutions are
managed by a committee of three members: Ms. Kala Vijayakumar, President, SSN
Institutions, Mr. P. Sivaprasad, Chairman, Governing Council and Mr. N. Ranjit,
Chairman, Strategic Planning and Policies. The management committee sets the
policies and programs for the Institutions.
The Mission
Instituted in honour of Dr.
Shiv Nadar's father, Sri Sivasubramaniya Nadar, the Trust, in its mission, �is
committed to the creation, sustenance and empowerment of educational
institutions that specialize in Education & Research in IT and Emerging
Technologies. In pursuance of its goal, the Trust will conscientiously endeavor
to provide the opportunity for education and research to the meritorious
students at an affordable cost.�
The
Institution
The SSN Institutions are
ideally located on a sprawling 250 acre campus along the Old Mahabalipuram Road
- known as the �Cyber Corridor� of Chennai. The campus comprises aesthetically
designed buildings amidst a scenic setting. The Campus is fully networked
through optic fiber, and has excellent infrastructure for learning - Computer
Centres, modern workshops & labs, seminar halls and well - equipped libraries.
The Institution encourages its students in the path of academic excellence, with
adequate emphasis on co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. In an
atmosphere conducive to achievement, every student has the opportunity to excel
in his or her chosen area.
Dr. S. Salivahanan is the Principal and he has
over 30 years of teaching, research and industrial experience both in India and
abroad. Every student has the opportunity to be in touch with the latest in the
information age, thanks to the dedicated campus - wide internet facility. The
admission is based on merit only and this policy encourages students from all
economic strata of society, and provides strong scholarship support based on
merit and need.
The Programs
The SSN Institutions presently offer seven
undergraduate level, and seven postgraduate level programs. All the programs are
affiliated to Anna University, Chennai and approved by the AICTE, New Delhi. The
programs follow the curriculum of Anna University, and the methodology focuses
on classroom interaction, self-learning, periodical evaluation, projects,
partnerships with industry/leading academic institutions.

Semester (4 Years) duration

SSN SoMCA
The SSN School of
Management & Computer Applications offers two PG programs:
SSN SoMCA is a new
generation Institution geared to create a powerful resource base of budding
business managers and software applications specialists. Expert faculty drawn
from industry and academia are the catalysts to the learning on campus and
facilitate valuable exposure to real life situations and solutions. The campus
has an outstanding educational infrastructure and supports placement efforts in
a significant way.
The MBA program offered by SSN School of
Management & Computer Applications is IT � enabled, & highly industry oriented.
The final semester of the program is devoted to a real � time project with
industry. The program at the School of Management offers modules in
International Business, Business Ethics, & Management of Technology, besides
electives in major disciplines of Management.
SSN SASE
SSN presents a great opportunity for all Indian
intellectual minds to obtain world class education from the pioneers, Carnegie
Mellon University - USA. SSN School of Advanced Software Engineering (SSN SASE)
in collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University offers for the first time in
India: Carnegie Mellon's Master of Science degree program in Information
Technology with specialization in Software Engineering, Robotics Technology,
Embedded System and Software Management.
It is a one and a half year full time residential
program. The first year is offered in SSN School of Advanced Software
Engineering. In this period, the students complete core courses, prerequisites,
electives and project work. Experienced faculty of SSNSASE and practicing
professionals conduct the courses in the first year using Carnegie Mellon
courseware. The faculty of SSNSASE and Carnegie Mellon University continuously
evaluate the students.
On successful completion of the one-year curriculum in India, the
students get a certificate from Carnegie Mellon University. They can then
proceed to Carnegie Mellon University to complete further studies in six months,
and obtain the MSIT degree. The coursework at Carnegie Mellon University
consists of project work under the supervision of Carnegie Mellon University and
two electives.
Students desirous of
proceeding to Carnegie Mellon University should obtain a valid GRE score and US
visas. And one does not need to spend a fortune for this. The SSN Educational
and Charitable Trust provides a scholarship of 50% on the tuition fee to every
student. The alumni of SSN SASE are placed well in companies like Microsoft,
IBM, Infosys, Satyam, Polaris, HCL etc., with average salary of 6.5 lakhs.
The Faculty Profile
A dedicated and academically strong team of 230
faculty members facilitate active learning at the SSN Institutions. The faculty
is encouraged to take up consultancy / research assignments in industry. This
helps impart a practical approach in the classroom. The faculty - student ratio
is at a favourable 1:12. The faculty members undergo periodical upgradation
programs.
The Library
The Central Library has an extensive collection
of books and is augmented on a continuous basis. The library subscribes around
200 popular periodicals, national and international journals. A large number of
CD-ROMS (2000) and audio cassettes are a supplementary digital resource offered.
SSN is an institutional member of the IIT, Anna University and British Council
Libraries.
Modern Hostels
SSN Institutions have a well-furnished hostels,
separately for men and women and they are virtually home away from home for
hostelites. Every room in the hostel is provided with high speed internet
connectivity.
Auditorium
The centrally air-conditioned 1000 seater modern
auditorium is undoubtedly the crown jewel of the campus. The Auditorium is the
hub of international, national conferences, cultural events, etc. involving
academic experts, CEOs from industry and other high dignitaries, notable among
them being Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, His Excellency, The President of India.
Professional Societies
IEEE Student Branch, CSI
Chapter and ISTE Chapter have been effectively functioning in the campus since
the inception of the College. The various activities inside and outside the
college have moulded the students professionally and hence they would be
competitive entrepreneurs in future.
IEEE Student Branch (School Code: 60551)
The IEEE Student Branch was started in 1998, with
25 student members and Mr. Madhu, Lecturer / EEE Department as its Counselor.
The branch helps the budding Engineers to be technically proficient,
professionally astute, and aware of their responsibility to the society.
Mr. Ashwin Kumar Sahoo has been the IEEE Student Branch Counsellor since July
2000. He has contributed a lot in terms of growth of IEEE membership among peers
group by conducting many technical and social activities. He was instrumental in
the establishment of IEEE Student Branch library. Currently the IEEE Student
Branch has 300 students and 60 faculty as its members. He was the mentor for the
IEEE Student Branch of SMK Fomra Institute of Technology, Chennai.
This most vibrant SSN Student Branch conducted several technical seminars,
conferences and social activities. The branch was honoured to conduct the IEEE
All India Student Congress (AISC 2006) successfully during September 28 - 30,
2006 with 415 participants. This success has brought �IEEE R10 Student / GOLD /
WIE Congress 2008� to be conducted during January 28 - 30, 2008 in SSN
Institutions.
It is worth mentioning the contributions of the
past office bearers Mr. Karthik Ramesh, Mr. Prerit Mittal, Ms N. Gowri, Mr.
Niranjaya Ravindran and Mr. R. Bhargav and the present office bearers Ms.
Bhavika Kansara, Mr. Shanker Narayan and Mr. Prithvin Rajendran for the
successful operation of branch activities.
Sports
The SSN Institutions pursue
excellence in sports. The sports infrastructure comprises separate gymnasia for
men and women; indoor sports facilities for Table Tennis, Squash, Basketball and
Badminton; outdoor venues for Volleyball and Cricket. The SSN Institutions have
an impressive record of performance in state and national level sporting
events.
Placements
The Placement and Training
Cell is dedicated to advising the students on career options and providing
updated information on summer training opportunities and employment vacancies.
The cell also conducts mock group discussions and interviews for students as
part of training for placement tests. Students are given guidance in resume &
application preparations. A major thrust of the cell is to constantly network
with business and industry to update the list of prospective employers, skill
levels of students required and secure commitments for campus placements. All
the hard work put together has made the institution to march towards 100%
placement.
Academic Achievements
The Institution is
certified with ISO 9001 : 2000. Four UG programs (ECE, EEE, CSE & IT) and two PG
programs (MBA & MCA) have been accredited by National Board of Accreditation,
AICTE, New Delhi.

University examinations among its 250 affiliated engineering colleges in TamilNadu.

The college received the
prestigious Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan National Award for an Engineering College
having best overall performance for the year 2006 from Indian Society for
Technical Education, New Delhi.

OUTLOOK magazine ranked the college
9th among the private engineering colleges in India (June
2007).

Data Quest ranked the college 29th
among all Engineering Colleges in India (June 2007).

The college also received the award
of Best Engineering College for the academic year 2005-06 from The Mylapore
Academy, Chennai.
e-learning initiative
Starting
from July 2007, each student getting admitted to the college, has been given a
Laptop facilitating e-learning. All the classes will be using the electronic
media as primary teaching medium. Progressively, it will be continued with more
batches getting admitted in the following years as well, irrespective of whether
the programme is UG or PG. Thus, by 2010 July, the entire education in the
college will be through computers. As a necessary corollary, the entire campus
is being made WiFi enabled, in phases.
Research
The Institution has a
Research Advisory Council consisting of Dr. Shiv Nadar as the Chairman, and
External Experts Dr. Raj Reddy, Co-chair and Advisor on IT to President (USA),
Professor of Computer Science & Robotics, Carnegie Mellon University, USA, Dr.
V.S. Arunachalam, Founder � CSTEP, Former Advisor to Defence Ministry, Former
Vice-Chairman, Tamil Nadu State Planning Commission, Dr. N. Balakrishnan,
Associate Director, IISc, Bangalore and Dr. R. Natarajan, Former Chairman of
AICTE, Former Director of IITM as members.
Dr. P. Ramasamy,
Dean-Research and his team are involved in the process of growing the �World�s
Longest Crystal� in SSN Crystal Growth Centre.
The departments of EEE, ECE,
CSE, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry have been recognized as Research Centres
by Anna University for offering Ph.D. / M.S. (By Research) programmes. The
different departments have been awarded sponsored research projects with a total
grant of Rs.2 Crores by DST, AICTE, Naval Research Board, Ministry of Science
and Technology etc. SSN College of Engineering has signed MoUs with Carnegie
Mellon University, USA, National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan, Aichi Institute
of Technology, Japan, National Physical Laboratory, New Delhi, Indira Gandhi
Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam, Central Leather Research
Institute (CLRI), IBM, Infosys Technologies Ltd., HCL Technologies Ltd., HCL
Infosystems and Cognizant Technology Solutions (CTS).
The Institution is now awaiting
the approval of being upgraded to a University status and continues its march
towards meeting the ideals of its founders.
